A new species of Pseudoniphargus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from subterranean water of northeastern Morocco: Historical biogeography and evolutionary aspects Naturalis
Abiari, A. Fakher el; Oulbaz, Z.; Messouli, M.; Coineau, N..
A new species of Pseudoniphargus, P. longiflagellum (Crustacea, Amphipoda) is described from subterranean fresh water of the Riftan region of Morocco. This species is closely related to the group P. ruffoi-P. longipes, which shares several apomorphic characters. The two-step model of colonization and evolution provides an understanding of the origin and the age of this stygobiont. P. longiflagellum is derived from marine ancestors that lived in the coastal groundwater of the Tethyan South-Rifian channel during the Miocene Tortonian period. The regression of this corridor during the late Tortonian period or at the beginning of the Messinian period may have played a major role in the evolutionary history through vicariance.

The fi rst Microcharon (Crustacea, Isopoda, Microparasellidae) from the Moroccan North Saharan Platform. Phylogeny, origin and palaeobiogeography Naturalis
Aït Boughrous, A.; Boulanouar, M.; Yacoubi, M.; Coineau, N..
The interstitial stygobites of the genus Microcharon (Crustacea, Isopoda, Microparasellidae) are highly diversified in Morocco, especially in the High Atlas. A new species from the North Saharan platform is described. Microcharon oubrahimae n. sp. is characterized by the original morphology of the first male pleopod which exhibits a concave inner margin of the distal part and a subdistal position of the armature. From a phylogenetic point of view, M. oubrahimae does not belong to the lineage which includes the Moroccan Atlasian species. In contrast, it belongs to the eastern- Mediterranean group of species. It is related to the species of the group M. orghidani-M. bureschi-M. phlegetonis from Romania and Bulgaria. The two-step model of colonization and...

Arfaoui,A; Hmimou,R; Ouammi,L; Soulaymani,A; Mokhtari,A; Chafiq,F; Soulaymani-Bencheikh,R.
The present work aims to find the epidemiological profile of snakebites in Morocco through a retrospective study of 1,423 snakebite cases that occurred between 1992 and 2007. Data were obtained from medical charts of envenomation at the Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center of Morocco. Results revealed that 86% of the snakebites had occurred in rural areas and that males were significantly more affected than females at a sex ratio of 23:20. Furthermore, 35% of the bites happened during the summer, with a peak of 215 cases in June (15.1%). We also discovered that 67.3% of the patients were bitten during the day. The age group that comprised the most agriculturally active persons, from 20 to 44 years old, was the most affected by snakebites (551...

Norovirus and Other Human Enteric Viruses in Moroccan Shellfish ArchiMer
Benabbes, Laila; Ollivier, Joanna; Schaeffer, Julien; Parnaudeau, Sylvain; Rhaissi, Houria; Nourlil, Jalal; Le Guyader, Soizick.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of human enteric viruses in shellfish collected along the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Coast of Morocco. A total of 77 samples were collected from areas potentially contaminated by human sewage. Noroviruses were detected in 30 % of samples, with an equal representation of GI and GII strains, but were much more frequently found in cockles or clams than in oysters. The method used, including extraction efficiency controls, allowed the quantification of virus concentration. As in previous reports, results showed levels of contamination between 100 and 1,000 copies/g of digestive tissues. Sapoviruses were detected in 13 % of samples mainly in oyster and clam samples. Hepatitis A virus was detected in two...

Eau colorée à Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge, dans une zone aquacole du littoral du Doukkala (Atlantique marocain) ArchiMer
Bennouna, A; Berland, B; El Attar, J; Assobhei, O.
A red tide of Lingulodinium polyedrum occured along the moroccan atlantic coast in july 1999. Observed in the beginning of the month in the Kenitra area, it spreads with the coastal drift as far as the south of safi, passing on its way upon a sanitary monitored area. This area which is submitted to an all year round bimonthly monitoring analysis of phytoplankton, contains significant natural beds of oysters, clams and mussels, as well as shellfish farms in Oualidia and Sidi Moussa lagoons. However, during this period of bloom, there was weekly monitoring of hydrologic and climatic data associated with phytoplankton analysis to identify the causes of this bloom. This bloom occured in 17-18degreesC surface waters, temperatures which are favourable to...

Un nouveau Microcharon (Isopoda, Janiroidea) du Maroc — origine et biogéographie historique Naturalis
Boulanouar, M.; Yacoubi, M.; Messouli, M.; Coineau, N..
The interstitial crustacean isopods of the genus Microcharon (Microparasellidae) are relatively well-diversified and widely distributed in Morocco. A new species, M. boutini, is described. The 5-dentate mandibular pars incisiva, the elongated inner lobe of the exopodite, and the reduced armature of the first male pleopod characterize the species. M. boutini n. sp. belongs to the monophyletic messoulii group of species, the most primitive representatives of the genus. The distribution of M. boutini n. sp. covers both the northwestern part of the Jbilet and the nearest adjacent plain, as well as the High Atlas of the Marrakech piedmont. From a historical biogeographic point of view, interstitial ancestral marine populations would have been left in...

Risk factors for scorpion stings in the beni mellal province of morocco J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Charrab,N; El Oufir,R; Soulaymani,A; Semlali,I; Mokhtari,A; Soulaymani,R.
Scorpion stings comprise a serious problem throughout the globe, especially in regions where they are more frequent. In Morocco, Beni Mellal is one of the provinces most affected by this burden. This study aimed to trace the epidemiological profile of scorpion stings in Beni Mellal in order to improve patient care and prevent both morbidity and mortality. Our work is a retrospective study of scorpion stings based on medical charts of Beni Mellal. From 2002 to 2007, 8,340 cases were registered in this province with an average incidence of 1.36‰. The stings were more frequent in summer months, particularly July and August, and between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. (59.8%). The average age of victims was 26.54 ± 18.42 years. Children were affected in 30.3% of the cases....

EU Trade Preferences for Moroccan Tomato Exports--Who Benefits? AgEcon
Chemnitz, Christine; Grethe, Harald.
The EU applies a complex system of preferences for tomato imports from Morocco. Quantities are fixed and serve as entry price quotas and tariff rate quotas at the same time. This paper provides empirical evidence of i) the existence of an economic rent under the EU preferential scheme for tomato imports from Morocco of about €24-36.5 mill. per year, and ii) the distribution of that rent. Due to the structure of the Moroccan export sector as well as the EU method of allocating import licenses, it is likely that a large part of the quota rent ends up at the Moroccan side and that a dissipation of the rent in physical rent-seeking activities is limited.

Production and marketing of organic fruits and vegetables in Morocco Organic Eprints
EL MALOUI, Hamid.
Organic agriculture in Morocco is still in its infancy. In absence of domestic market, the whole production is exported towards the European market. Moroccan organic exports of fruits and vegetables are growing sharply. Yet, the exported quantity is still limited. The late establishment of national standards, the lack of public support, the absence of local market and the inadequate marketing structure are the main hindrances of organic production development in the Kingdom. The aim of this study is to identify the opportunities and constraints facing the organic production and marketing, to provide an understanding of the limitations of the existing production system and exports’ strategies, and to suggest how these limitations can be overcome and...

Water pricing options for the Middle Drâa River Basin in Morocco AgEcon
Heidecke, Claudia; Kuhn, Arnim; Klose, Stephan.
This paper discusses the possible effects of various ways of charging for water in an integrated modeling framework adapted to the Drâa River Basin in southeastern Morocco. Declining surface water availability in the basin has led to an increase in groundwater use for irrigation in recent decades, even though groundwater extraction is more costly than using surface water. The trade-off between the pricing of ground and surface water is discussed based on recursive-dynamic simulations over a ten-year period. The results identify groundwater pricing as an economically and environmentally favorable option, assuming that revenues from water charges are redistributed to farmers.

Metal concentrations in sediment and Nereis diversicolor in two Moroccan lagoons: Khnifiss and Oualidia ArchiMer
Idardare, Zaina; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Moukrim, A; Alla, A; Auger, Dominique; Lefrere, L; Rozuel, Emmanuelle.
Metal concentrations were measured monthly during an annual cycle (December 2004 to January 2006) in the tissues of Nereis diversicolor ragworms and sediment from two Moroccan Atlantic coastal lagoons: Oualidia in the north, situated in a highly industrialised urban area and Khnifiss in the south, far from anthropogenic influences. Relatively high levels of Zn, Ag and Cd were found in the sediment of Oualidia lagoon, while Ni concentrations were shown to be high at Khnifiss. The significant metal levels at Oualidia are a result of industrial and urban discharges, coupled with discharges from adjacent phosphate ore processing plants. Trace metal concentrations in worms vary according to season; they are usually high in winter and spring, in relation to the...

Crustal structure of the NW Moroccan margin from deep seismic data (SISMAR Cruise) ArchiMer
Jaffal, Mohammed; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Matias, Luis; Teixeira, Fernando; Amrhar, Mostafa.
During the SISMAR cruise (spring 2001), new deep seismic data were acquired on the Atlantic Moroccan margin. The purpose of the present work is to analyse and to interpret a part of the data consisting of four wide-angle seismic profiles (4, 5, 8 and 10) recorded offshore El Jadida. Lines 4 and 5, perpendicular to the margin, show a crustal thickness of 35 km under the western Moroccan Meseta which thins progressively seaward where it reaches a minimum thickness of 10 km. The calculated velocity models show that this crust consists of two crustal layers overlain by a sedimentary cover corresponding to the post-Paleozoic sediments, characterised by a low velocity. The detailed shallow structure is obtained primarily from multichannel seismic data. Half...
